Do patients need a paper copy of a private e-prescription?
The short answer is no. In almost every case, your patients do not need a paper copy of a private e-prescription. With secure digital prescribing now used by clinics and pharmacies all over the UK, prescriptions can be created, signed and transmitted electronically, with dispensing and delivery handled for you.
At Healistic, we work with clinicians across the UK to remove the need for paperwork entirely.
Prescriptions are generated digitally, signed with an advanced electronic signature, and then fulfilled through our partner pharmacies. Medication is dispatched directly to the patient, often within two hours in London and within twenty-four hours nationwide.
What Is an E-Prescription?
An electronic prescription is the digital equivalent of a paper prescription.
Instead of printing and signing a form for your patient to carry to a pharmacy, you authorise it digitally. The prescription is then sent securely to the pharmacy system, where it can be validated and dispensed.
The process is fully compliant with UK legislation. Under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012, an advanced electronic signature has the same legal validity as a hand-signed script. The signature has to be uniquely linked to you as the prescriber, under your sole control, and must invalidate the prescription if it is tampered with.
For you as a clinician, this means faster workflows, fewer admin bottlenecks, and less time spent fielding queries from pharmacies.
For your patients, it means more convenience and a lower risk of misplaced or delayed prescriptions.
Do Patients Still Need Paper Copies?
In private practice, a paper copy is not normally needed. When you issue a prescription digitally, the pharmacy receives it directly, checks it against their system and prepares the medication. Patients can then collect it in person or, with Healistic, receive it via courier delivery.
The vast majority of routine private prescriptions, like for contraception, acne treatment, HRT or common infections, can be managed entirely electronically.
Your patient does not need to handle a piece of paper at any stage.
When Might Paper Still Be Needed?
There are a few exceptions where a paper prescription might still be needed.
These include controlled drugs dispensed in batches, patients who need to have prescriptions dispensed outside England, or cases where system limitations mean EPS cannot be used. You may also choose to issue a paper prescription if you believe it is in the best interests of the patient.
For most day-to-day private prescribing, however, these scenarios do not apply. If you are working with Healistic, the process is already set up to be fully digital and compliant.
Why Paperless Prescribing Is Better
For clinicians, digital prescribing reduces admin workload. You can issue prescriptions during face-to-face, telephone or video consultations and send them instantly to a pharmacy.
There is no need to prepare paper scripts, no risk of loss, and prescriptions can be cancelled or reissued easily.
Patients get shorter waiting times, more convenience and better data safety.
Prescriptions can't be misplaced, medication errors are less likely, and delivery is usually faster than traditional collection. At Healistic, many of our patients now expect this level of service as standard.
How Healistic Supports Clinicians
At Healistic, we help you install a fully integrated digital prescribing service into your clinic.
Once it is integrated into your systems, all you need to do is create and sign the prescription digitally. We then take care of the fulfillment and delivery through our partner pharmacies.
For your patients, this means they can get their medication within hours in London or by the next day elsewhere in the UK. For you, it removes the administrative strain of managing prescriptions and allows you to focus on clinical care.

Repeat Prescriptions Without Paperwork
For patients on long-term medication, managing repeat prescriptions electronically is especially valuable.
With our repeat prescription service, you can authorise a set of prescriptions in advance, and we will make sure each one is dispensed and delivered on time.
Your patients avoid unnecessary delays and you avoid unnecessary time spent reissuing paper scripts.
Is It Safe and Compliant?
Yes. Electronic prescriptions created through Healistic are compliant with UK regulations.
Each prescription is authorised using an advanced electronic signature and transmitted securely. All data is encrypted and handled in line with GDPR, and prescriptions are dispensed only through registered UK pharmacies.
This means you can prescribe electronically with full confidence that your patients’ medication and data are safe.
So, Do Patients Need Paper Copies?
In practice, no. For the vast majority of private prescribing scenarios, patients do not need a paper copy of their prescription.
A secure, digitally signed prescription is legally valid, clinically safe and far more efficient.
At Healistic, we make sure that your prescribing process is seamless, compliant and completely paper free, so that you can focus on delivering care while we handle the rest.
If you would like to make digital prescribing part of your practice, register with Healistic and see how quickly it can transform the way you and your patients manage prescriptions.
